Introduction: Learning Through Culture & Cuisine
At Modern International School, Dwarka, we believe that real learning happens when classroom knowledge meets culture and community. On Day 4 of our activity week, our focus shifts to something close to every child’s heart—food!
By exploring local cuisines, identifying spices, fruits, and vegetables, and preparing traditional dishes, students experience hands-on learning that stimulates the senses, sparks curiosity, and builds a strong connection with India’s rich culinary heritage.
This unique, multi-sensory educational experience transforms the classroom into a live kitchen and food museum. Children don’t just eat—they learn, touch, smell, taste, name, and prepare, gaining insights into nutrition, tradition, science, and social bonding.
🥘 What Day 4 Includes: From Farm to Plate
On Day 4, students are guided by their teachers in a culinary discovery journey:
- Identifying commonly used Indian spices like turmeric, cumin, cardamom, fenugreek, cloves
- Learning the names of vegetables and fruits in English, Hindi, and regional languages
- Preparing simple and traditional dishes with the help of teachers
- Understanding the cultural significance of dishes like poha, upma, khichdi, aloo paratha, puri-sabzi, etc.
It’s not just about cooking—it’s about connecting roots to recipes.
🧂 Spice It Up! – Learning Through Ingredients
Children are introduced to:
- Colorful, aromatic spices in their natural form
- Their names in different languages
- Their role in Indian cooking and digestion
- The regions where these spices grow
Activities include:

Students explore a vibrant table full of fresh fruits and vegetables:
- Naming them in Hindi and English
- Discussing which dishes they are used in
- Sorting them into seasonal and regional categories
- Talking about their health benefits
For example:
- Spinach – rich in iron and used in palak paneer
- Mango – summer fruit used in aam ras, pickles
- Cauliflower – used in gobi paratha, sabzi
This session helps students understand nutrition, food diversity, and the farm-to-fork journey.
🍲 Cooking With Teachers – A Taste of Tradition
With all safety protocols in place, teachers and students together prepare simple, no-fire dishes such as:
- Fruit chaat
- Masala poha
- Bhel puri
- Aloo sandwich
- Coconut ladoos
These quick-prep dishes are:
- Fun to assemble
- Rich in cultural value
- Easily replicable at home
Students wear aprons, participate in mixing ingredients, and share what they made with their classmates. It’s learning, teamwork, and joy—all in one bowl!
🎓 Educational Value Behind Culinary Exploration
Day 4 is not just a food day—it’s a day full of cross-curricular learning, including:
- Language skills (names, spelling, pronunciation)
- Science (nutrients, digestion, farm produce, food groups)
- Math (measuring ingredients, counting fruits)
- Geography (where ingredients are grown)
