Earth Day Celebration at MIS: Green Learning for Kids

At Modern International School (MIS), we believe environmental awareness isn’t just a one‑day affair—it’s a lifestyle. That’s why in April 2022, we celebrated the entire month as Earth–Water–Air (EWA) Festival Month, inspiring students from Nursery to Grade 10 to understand and act on climate change, conservation, and sustainability (ThePrint). Why a Full Month for Earth Day?

Earth Day on April 22 unites over a billion people worldwide. But as MIS Principal, Sima J. Singh, explains, “teaching kids on a single day about the earth and climate changes can’t make any changes”; hence the month-long EWA initiative (ThePrint).

Engaging Every Sense: Curriculum Roots & Hands-On Learning

MIS embraced a multi-layered approach—covering science, art, assemblies, outdoor learning, and sustainability tools—to instill lifelong eco-conscious habits.

1. Age‑Appropriate Learning

  • Nursery & KG (3–5 yrs): Focused on caring for all living things. On Earth Day, little learners created a pledge canvas using soil, leaves, grasses, and water—symbolizing their connection to nature .
  • Primary Grades (6–11 yrs): Planted saplings and recited pledges. Interactive sessions guided them through climate, global warming, greenhouse effect, carbon footprint, and fossil fuels (ThePrint).

2. Scientific Concepts with Real-World Context

Young Minds learned:

  • The basics of climate change and its causes
  • Impacts of global warming
  • Significance of carbon dioxide and carbon footprint
  • Alternatives to fossil fuels
  • Importance of recycling, repurposing, and reuse

Director Dr Gaurav Nigam emphasized that although environmental issues go beyond individual acts, “we want to educate students to show them they can live cleaner lives pretty easily by recycling…” (ThePrint).

3. Activity-Driven Learning for Little Learners

Recognizing that concepts like greenhouse gases and ocean acidification may overwhelm younger students, teachers curated hands-on projects:

  • Canvas art with natural materials
  • Tree plantation drives
  • Eco pledges and assemblies

4. Dialogue to Address Climate Anxiety

MIS encourages open conversation. As Dr Priya Mathur, Director, notes, their approach includes not only presenting facts but “help kids cope with climate anxiety—even when we, too, are feeling overwhelmed” (ThePrint, Wikipedia).

Why Environmental Focus Matters in Modern International Education

Sustainability = Real-World Readiness

Educating students about sustainability equips them to solve real-world challenges—as citizens, consumers, and future leaders.

Community & Collaboration

EWA month brought students, teachers, and families together—reinforcing a sense of community through shared eco goals.

Integration Into School Life

Not just extra activities—environmental themes were woven into subjects like science, art, language, and PE, making lessons richer and more relevant.

Core Themes

Theme Focus & Activities
Earth Soil-based artworks, plantation drives, Earth Day pledges
Water Conservation talks, talks on pollution/hygiene, reminders to reduce wastage
Air Discussions on greenhouse gases, climate science, clean air strategies

Looking Ahead: MIS’s Ongoing Green Journey

EWA was just the beginning. MIS plans to embed sustainability in school culture:

  • Eco-clubs with student-led initiatives
  • Green audits (like plastic, energy use, water)
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Composting and kitchen-garden projects

Our Green Schools Programme draws inspiration from initiatives like CSE’s Gobar Times project, where students audit key resource areas—water, air, land, energy, and waste—to help their school improve (ThePrint, Wikipedia).

How Parents & Students Can Join MIS’s Green Mission

  1. Home Garden Projects
Continue lessons with home activities—growing plants, collecting rainwater, low-waste crafts.
  2. Watch for Upcoming Events
Events like EWA may lead to new celebrations—possibly World Water Day (March 22) or World Environment Day (June 5).
